If the Hebrew word SHeMeN is “oil” in English and the wise virgins have oil for their lamp and the foolish ones do not, and if the root word of SHeMeN is SHeM which can literally mean “breath” or pressed air that flows, and “oil” and “breath” are often symbolic of the Ruach Ha’QoDeSH (Holy Spirit); then, we must ask ourselves,
“Do we and will we have the SHeMeN that is the “oil” or “breath” or “spirit” to PRAY, PRAISE and PROCLAIM the Mighty Elohim, El Shaddai (the many breasted One who has more than enough provision), the One Who created all things with His “breath?!!!”
In Hebrew, the word SHeM for “name” is the same root word for oil or essential oils — SHeMeN. SHeM, usually translated as name, denotes the power, character and authority of a person or, in this case, the G-d of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Thus, in this sense, SHeMeN or essential oils have the power and character of Elohim. This is especially so when we consider that Elohim gives life and healing to the spirit, soul and body which is what essential oils or SHeMeN has the innate ability to do also. His creation of SHeMeN reflects His power, character and authority and it is with the breath which He has given us that we can experience healing from SHeMeN.
SHeM also means “breath.” Picture, in your mind’s eye, the pressed breath (as denoted by the ancient Hebrew pictograph “shin”) of Elohim from which He spoke the original unadulterated Hebrew language, from the alef to the tav (the first and the last letters in the Hebrew alef bet/alphabet) to create all things and for whom YeHuSHuWaH </Yeshua/Jesus> said he was).
In English Jewish writings, you will most often see the name of Elohim written as HaShem which means “the name” and it is used to replace the Hebrew letters yod, hey, vav/waw, hey. Elohim is YHWH’s title referring to Him as God – the Almighty One while the yod hey, vav, hey (YHWH) is His actual name. The people of Judah or Jews believe His name is to be sacred, set apart, holy (QaDoSH) and should not be used or spoken in a mundane or common way. After all, He is the King of the Universe, the Creator of all things and they reason that you don’t address a king or one’s father by their first name. Some may only use His name in private intimate prayer. This is their way of showing the utmost respect and honor to the King of All Creation.
In Messianic writings, you may see the yod, hey, vav, hey written as YHWH or YHVH along with its many other transliterated variations such as Yahweh, Yehweh, YeHuWaH, YaHuWaH, Jehovah, etc.. Many Hebrew Roots and Messianic Believers think the Creator’s name should be literally spoken and it’s wrong not to literally call upon His name.
In either case as to whether or not to literally pronounce Elohim’s name, we should not be remiss to not have His breath, SHeM or Set Apart Spirit. I exhort us to not argue over this but to love one another with reverence and esteem for each other as brothers and sisters should. Let us behave as brothers and sisters towards one another and let Abba Father guide and correct us as He, alone, is able and worthy to do such.
In the pictograph Hebrew letters of yod, hey, vav, hey we could interpret YHWH to mean the hand that gives breath and life and secures life. Thus, His literal name or SHeM is life giving. This is very interesting and exciting when we consider that SHeMeN or essential oils also give life. The very root of SHeMeN gives life and healing just as the name SHeM gives life and secures it.
For the purposes of this article, I will endeavor to focus on what a name or what SHeM represents or means and how it relates to the word SHeMeN oil viz. essential oils. Before we further compare SHeM to SHeMeN, let’s also look at two other very important Hebrew words to a Believer in the SHeM or name (character, power and authority) of Elohim.
First, in Genesis 1:1, we see that Elohim Alef Tav created the SHeMaYiM which is normally translated as heavens. However, it can literally mean the “fragrant waters.” Note that the root is SHeM and does not the heavens or fragrant waters contain the power, character and authority of HaSHeM (The Name) and His breath and/or spirit?
Secondly, SHeM is also the root of the Hebrew word SHeMaH which means to listen, hear and obey. In the English Scriptures, this word is usually translated as hear or listen. The English loses the connotation of obey. However, any mother or father understands that when they are asking their child if they are listening or if they can hear them – what they are really asking is “DO YOU UNDERSTAND ME and ARE YOU GOING to DO WHAT I SAY and OBEY?!
Many Believers may only study the ReNEWed Testament and use it as their foundation instead of as the roof of their faith. This approach leads many of us to believe the first and greatest commandment is to “love the LORD (YHWH) with all your heart, soul and might and then to love your neighbor as yourself.” After all, this is considered to be the whole sum of the 613 commandments given in the TaNaKH (Old Testament). However, something is missing. I ask that you consider that the first and greatest commandment is to SHeMaH – that is to listen, hear and obey the voice of Elohim and His name which is His SHeM – power, character and authority. To SHeMaH is to hear His DaBaR (Word) that comes from His breath and spirit. To do so would produce the fruit within you to be like Him and walk in His power, character and authority as his son or daughter! When we SHeMaH, we demonstrate His breath and spirit in action.
The Hebrew word for voice (QoL) is likened to completeness, wholeness, bride, light and vibrations or sound which are frequencies. SHeMeN or essential oils have vibrational frequencies* that bring healing and balance just like Elohim’s name or SHeM! SHeMeN has, innately, the power, character and authority within to give life just as SHeM – His name does!
Once we begin to study the Hebrew language and the foundation of our faith – the Torah (the first 5 books of the Bible) we begin to see the key words, meanings and concepts in the ReNEWed Testament with a whole new understanding.
Many Believers think that Yeshua gave a NEW Commandment in Matthew 22:8 and Mark 12:29. They don’t realize that Yeshua taught from the foundation of Torah and that the Renewed Testament did not exist at the time of his life on earth. Yeshua’s response as to what was the first and greatest commandment was actually a quote from the Torah, in particular, Deuteronomy 6:4.
SHeMaH (Hear), O Israel: The LORD (YHWH) our God (Elohim) is one (Echad) LORD (YHWH): Deuteronomy 6:4
I question as to why the book of Matthew leaves out the first and greatest of the commandments which is known as the SHeMaH. Perhaps, it is a translation problem but I will leave that to the scholars. However, the book of Mark is more accurate as it states:
And YeHuSHuWaH (Yeshua/Jesus) answered him,
“The first of all the commandments is, ‘SHeMaH (Hear), O Israel; the LORD (YHWH) our God (Elohim) is one (echad) LORD (YHWH).'” Mark 12:29
The ReNEWed Covenant (New Testament) not only gives us the commandment to SHeMaH but also gives us a notable illustration in the passages about the Great Shepherd and His sheep in the book of John. We can see this in the Messiah’s own words wherein he states that his sheep SHeMaH (listen, hear and obey) His voice and He calls them by their SHeM (name/character) who have Elohim’s, power, character and authority:
John 10:3 . . . and the sheep SHeMaH/hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by SHeM/name, and leadeth them out.
He tells us that his sheep SHeMaH (listen, hear and obey) his voice and instructions and, therefore, will receive eternal life.
John 10:27 My sheep SHeMaH/hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
Since SHeM can mean breath, we could even say that His sheep breathe His breath or name, power, character and authority! He further tells us that His own will SHeMaH (listen, hear and obey) EVEN when DEAD — from the GRAVE — when He calls for them!!!!
John 5:25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall SHeMaH/hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that SHeMaH/hear shall live.
Personally, I believe when we humble ourselves and begin to SHeMaH viz. walk in the commandments and obedience unto YHWH as our Elohim, our DNA begins to change. Hidden, secretly within, something changes that will resonate and respond to the spoken DaBaR (word), VOICE (light), and BREATH (ruach) of YHWH Elohim.
It’s notable that when He “calls” and His own SHeMaH or hears His voice, they will obey and rise up! The pictograph for “voice” is QoL (kol) which can also be defined as “light forward or towards.” Along with its other translations of being a spark, crackling, light, vibrations, sound, completeness, wholeness and bride, we can definitely perceive how the dead will rise to meet Him! His Bride — Israel will SHeMaH and rise up and resonate towards His light by the vibrations of His DaBaR — Living Word to be restored and completed and made whole with Him — ECHAD!
Even more so, when we connect Elohim’s voice to His Word – *DaBaR which can pictographically mean “vibrations or frequencies put in order in or from the beginning” we can begin to see how His wholeness of voice or light completes and resurrects the Bride causing her to hear or SHeMaH even from the grave!
Thus, isn’t it interesting that SHeMeN or essential oils have signature or vibrational frequencies that can resonate with the cells in our body to bring healing and balance just like Elohim’s name or SHeM!
The Hebrew name (power, character and authority) of the Messiah Yeshua (YH’SH’WH), transliterated as YeHuSHuWaH, contains a shin (SH) pressed into the middle of the yod, hey, vav/waw, hey (YHWH). The Messiah’s name literally means YHWH saves and/or delivers and is often translated as salvation. This is where we get the English word Joshua (from YeHuSHuWaH) which is a shortened version with the modern use of the “j” instead of the yod which was denoted as an “i” in English. Examples: John, Joel, Jude, Jonah, and Jesus, in the Geneva Bible (1599), were typed as Iohn, Ioel, Iude, Ionah and IESVS.
Today, YeHuSHuWaH is often shortened to Yeshua/Jesus who stated that he did not come in his own name but in the name of his Father. That is to say, he came in the power, character and authority of his Father Elohim YHWH and not in his own name or SHeM – power, character and authority. In fact, he said he wasn’t acting on his own behalf or authority but on what his Father directed him to do (John 5:30, 5:43 and 8:38).
Thus, YeHuSHuWaH’s SHeM, breath and spirit was that of His Father’s — the King with all power, character and authority who gives the spirit and pressed breath of life. The Messiah was and demonstrated the pressed breath, spirit, character, power and authority of Elohim YHWH!
